In 2017 I had the idea, what if? What if I tracked down my ancestors and can actually become an Italian citizen?

Having tried the DIY route for some time ineffectively, it wasn’t until 2020 however (amidst a pandemic nonetheless) that I made contact with ICA and spoke with Marco. After speaking with others and hearing great experiences, I decided to go for it. My partner and I started the process really in October 2020.

Yesterday I walked into the commune and picked up my Carta d’Identita and now I am officially an Italian Citizen. Passport to come soon. It’s like a dream come true. Completely life altering.

After thinking that getting my Italian citizenship recognized was going to be impossible because all of my great-grandfather’s naturalized before the next in line was born, ICA came to the rescue with the idea of pursuing a 1948 case thru the courts. I had collected most of my documents myself and ICA told me what else was needed. Within a month or two of me sending all of my documents to Italy, our case was filed in the courts. Of course, then covid hit and the courts shut down but ICA stayed in touch and let us know what was going on. As an attorney myself in the states, I know how busy attorneys can be and it is not always possible to answer a client in the time frame they expect. What I loved about ICA, was that they assigned a contact person to me who responded within 24 hours to my million and one questions and concerns, a huge benefit when you are spending a lot of money in a location thousand of miles away. We have since been recognized and are awaiting the last few steps before we can get our passports. Great job ICA.
