ELIGIBILITY QUESTIONNAIRE FOR ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENT

The following test is an easy way to check if you meet the basic requirements to apply for Dual Italian Citizenship Jure Sanguinis. These questions are not exhaustive and are only aimed at helping the applicant understand if he/she meets the basic requirements to move forward, to start the process and apply for Italian Citizenship using the Jure sanguinis (blood line) criteria.

Law No. 74/2025, effective as of May 24, 2025, outlines new eligibility rules concerning the recognition of Italian citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis).
According to these new provisions, only individuals born abroad to an Italian-born parent or grandparent may be eligible for recognition.

Step One: Identify your ancestor and his/her basic data

1. Do you know your Italian ancestor’s full name?
2. Do you know his/her approximate date of birth?
3. Do you know the Italian town where he/she was born?

Step Two: trace a direct line between you and your ancestor

1. Was your parent or grandparent born in Italy?
2. Did your parent reside in Italy for two consecutive years after they acquired Italian citizenship and before you were born?
3. Is your parent or grandparent a woman who gave birth to her child before January 1st, 1948?

1. If yes, you may qualify for Italian Citizenship by descent.

2. If yes, you may qualify for Italian Citizenship by descent.

3. If no, you may qualify for Italian Citizenship by descent.
If yes, you may not be able to apply for Italian Citizenship by descent at the consulate, however you may be able to pursue Italian citizenship via the court system (read more)

Did you submit your citizenship application the competent consular office, Italian municipality, or filed in court by 11:59 PM Rome Time on March 27, 2025 OR receive notification of an appointment to submit your application by 11:59 PM Rome Time on March 27, 2025?

If yes, your application will be processed in accordance with the eligibility rules in effect prior to May 24, 2025. If no, your application will be processed in accordance with the rules in effect after May 24, 2025.
