The Fast IT portal is intended to simplify AIRE registration for Italians living abroad, but like many online services, it can have its quirks to work through. In this article, we cover what the portal does, the importance of AIRE registration, and provide some tips to work through potential issues.
Who can utilize Fast IT?
It is important to note that the Fast IT portal is only useful for those who have had their Italian citizenship finalized, as well as Italian citizens moving abroad. Therefore, if you are still in midst of collecting documentation for Italian citizenship, or waiting for it to be processed, you will not need to concern yourself with Fast IT.
What is Fast IT?
Fast IT is a portal that allows Italian citizens to access certain limited consular services online without having to go to the consulate in person. Namely, it provides AIRE registration, though users can also request transcriptions of vital records. If you’re a new Italian citizen, you can also request your codice fiscale, or Italian tax code, through the service. Also, if you’re struggling to find the Italian consulate that covers your local jurisdiction, you can conduct a simple search through the portal too.
How to register
As of the time of writing this article, it is possible to use a username/email and password to register with Fast IT, but by December 31, 2026, every user will need to access with SPID or CIE credentials. Both of these are digital IDs. A SPID is a digital ID handled through a certified third-party provider. You can find a list for them on SPID’s official website. A CIE is a digital ID attached to your Italian carta d’identità (identity card). It is often the easier, preferred option for those who reside abroad.
After you have one of these credentials, you can use them to log into the Fast ID portal, and from there, submit and verify your personal information, and make your AIRE request.
AIRE
AIRE is the Registry of Italian Citizens Living Abroad, and is required for every Italian citizen who stays more than 12 months outside of Italy. Registration must occur within 90 days of moving. If you change addresses during your time outside of Italy, you will need to update your registration to reflect that as well. Fines for non-compliance can range from €200 for €1,000 per year. To register, you will need to provide your local consulate with a copy of your Italian passport, proof of legal residence in your new country, and proof of address. Fast IT’s portal can handle this documentation.
Troubleshooting issues
As with any online program, there could be issues users run into. Here, we provide some guidance on how to resolve common problems:
- If you accidentally entered the wrong location – head to “Anagrafe Consolare e AIRE”, “Communicate a change in residence”, and then “Modify residence”.
- If you lost access to the email used to create your account – you cannot have more than one account on Fast IT with the same credentials. If you remember the password, you can login and change your email. If you don’t remember the password, reach out to your consulate to change the email associated with the account. Remember that by the end of 2026, only SPID and CIE credentials can be used.
- Which municipality in Italy to register with – AIRE requires registration with the last Italian municipality of residence. If you have not resided in Italy, this will instead be the municipality that holds your birth certificate.
- If Fast IT does not recognize you as an Italian citizen – It is very important to register with the exact data reflected in your Italian citizenship records, particularly your full name and birth date, otherwise it could cause confusion in the system.
- If you have not received confirmation of your AIRE registration within 90 days of submission – Email your consulate requesting written confirmation.
Tip: confirm your AIRE registration outside of Fast IT’s portal
It is not unusual for Fast IT to display you as not enrolled in AIRE despite going through the process and being confirmed by your Italian consulate and municipality. For this reason, it is important to confirm directly with your municipality that you are enrolled, rather than relying on whatever Fast IT’s portal shows (even if it does display you as enrolled). We recommend receiving written confirmation from your Italian municipality and/or consulate. Also, keep all documents you submit and any other communication you go through, with their corresponding dates, in case you would ever need it.
Depending on issues with the portal and/or your documentation, you might still need to register directly with your consulate.
